Dni, których nie znamy - Poland

"Only the days in the future yet unknown to us are important"

Wiktoria Walczyk

What is the song about? What does the song mean?

The song ‘Dni, których nie znamy’ is a classic of Polish poetry music, written and sung by Marek Grechuta, with music by Jan Kanty Pawluśkiewicz.

The song is a call to reflection, subtly reminding us of the finiteness of life and that memories fade and disappear. It also encourages listeners to try to understand themselves better and find their own voice amid the noise of the world. At the same time, it is an ode to the future. The literal translation of the title is “Days we don’t know yet”. Its message is that only the days in the future we don't yet know matter, with the moments we wait for being the most important.

Why is the song so well known in your country of origin?

It is a popular song in Poland that has even been used in the soundtrack of a number of films. It is almost an anthem that is sung at school celebrations or political rallies, for example. It is also considered the unofficial club song of football club Korona Kielce.

The melancholic tone strikes exactly the chord of people who are far from home but still carry Poland in their hearts. The song's title is not only poetic but hopeful, appealing to people who dream of a better future - something that resonates strongly with Polish migrants trying to build a new life elsewhere.
