Alma Llanera - Venezuela

"It creates a bond with my parents and friends as we all sing this song together"

Fernando Gonzalez

What is the song about? What does the song mean?

"Alma Llanera" is a Venezuelan song, a joropo, created by Venezuelan musicians Pedro Elías Gutiérrez (composer) and Rafael Bolívar Coronado (lyricist). It was originally part of a zarzuela.

The text of “Alma Llanera” describes the natural beauty and spirit of the Venezuelan Llanos (plains), the strength of its rivers and the passion of the Venezuelans. The song is a celebration of llanero culture, which is deeply rooted in Venezuelan identity. The translation of the title is “Soul of the Plains”.

Why is the song so well known in your country of origin?

For Venezuelans, the song “Alma Llanera” is like a second national anthem. It is a very beautiful song and it is a tradition to end parties and social gatherings singing this song. When “Alma Llanera” sounds everyone goes home. The party is over!

The song serves as a bridge that connects Venezuelans with their culture and roots. It evokes feelings of nostalgia for their homeland and unity among Venezuelans living abroad.

What special meaning does the song have for you?

The song “Alma Llanera” is very special to me because of the bond it creates with my parents and friends, as we all sing this song together, hugging and kissing. It is a very joyful way to connect with your loved ones. It is an indescribable emotion.

Tell us something about yourself. Who are you?

My name is Fernando Gonzalez. I was born in Caracas. I like to read, play tennis, swim and travel. Since my keen interest in chemistry, I decided to study Chemical Engineering at the University of Twente. Last year I was awarded the Incentive Prize for First Year Chemical Engineering Students by the Royal Holland Society of Sciences (KHMW). The Netherlands is a great country, but I really miss the mountains of Venezuela, especially El Ávila with its macaws (guacamayas) flying, which can be seen from our house in Caracas.

María Esther Gonzalez Varela is the mother of Fernando. She requested this song on behalf of her son. As a surprise! She is very proud of his accomplishments, but she misses him so much that she is counting the days until she can hug and kiss him again.
