Gracias a la Vida - Chile

"For me, this song symbolizes solidarity with my country."

Rosario Correa

What is the song about? What does the song mean?

The song "Gracias a la Vida" is a deeply moving and symbolic song. Literally translated, the title means ‘Thanks to life’. It is considered an ode to life and evokes a sense of gratitude and reflection. In particular, the song emphasizes the duality of life and acknowledges that both joy and suffering are fundamental parts of the human experience.

Why is the song so well known in your country of origin?

The song was written by Violeta Parra, one of the most important artists in Chilean folk music. Her work laid the foundation for the “New Chilean Song” – a movement that used music to speak out about social issues and had a big impact on Chilean culture.

The song was released in 1966, during a time of major change in Chile. It quickly became more than just music: it turned into a symbol of resistance and hope.

What special meaning does the song have for you?

For me, this song symbolizes solidarity with my country. I grew up with this song and for me it is connected to the identity of the Chilean people and my roots.

Tell us something about yourself. Who are you?

My name is Rosario Correa. I am from Chile and came to the Netherlands for love, almost 12 years ago. We now have two beautiful children. Music has always been close to me. Through music, the choir IntervOcaal and Diet Gerritsen, conductor of the choir, I have now found my place in the Netherland.
