Lizeth Chávez
The title roughly translates as 'Lovely Sweet One', although the word cielo means sky or heaven. It is also a term of endearment comparable to sweetheart. The word lindo means 'cute' or 'lovely' or 'pretty'.
This is a song that is in every Mexican heart, probably learnt during our time in primary school or we listened to it for the first time during a mariachi performance. It reflects our culture and has been sung by many prominent Mexican artists from the Mexican Music & Cinema Golden Age. It is our pride as Mexicans, it means happiness, love and victory, arguably being our "other" national anthem.
There's one particular phrase in the chorus that's impregnated in every Mexicans mind 'Ay ay ay ay, canta y no llores, porque cantando se alegran cielito lindo los corazones' which translates to 'don't cry, just sing, because singing heals our heart'.
I came from Mexico a year and a half ago and I am currently doing my master thesis about gene editing at the University of Twente. I am also the president and treasurer of the Latin American student association (LAVoz), and member of the Tartaros survival running association. In my free time I am learning Dutch, going to the gym, and doing Zumba and yoga. On the weekends I like to travel around the Netherlands to go to museums and get immersed in Dutch culture.
