What is the song about?<\/em><\/summary>\n

The lyrics and music of \u2018A Song for Unity\u2019 reflect the desire of the people of Myanmar to put aside their differences. It was originally composed to promote solidarity and cooperation among Myanmar's various ethnic groups. The song is written so that each verse is dedicated to one of Myanmar's seven main tribes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The dance video accompanying the song shows dancers in traditional dress from the aforementioned ethnic groups, performing together to emphasise the message of unity and cooperation. The choreography and costumes have been carefully chosen to celebrate the diversity and richness of Myanmar's cultural landscape.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n\n\n\n

Why is the song so loved and well known in Myanmar?<\/em><\/summary>\n

It is a powerful and meaningful song that conveys the message of togetherness and peace, it is often performed during protests and peaceful gatherings. It emphasises the need to cooperate, especially because of the ongoing conflicts and recent tragedies such as the devastating earthquake and the army's continued attacks on civilian targets. Moreover, the song has also acquired cultural significance. It has been performed at various events such as the Military Music Exchange 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The music is emotional and has a soothing yet powerful tone that reflects a sense of hope and determination. It reminds the Myanmar people of their shared history, which is especially important as the country struggles with internal conflict and external challenges.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n\n\n\n

What special meaning does the song have for you?<\/em><\/summary>\n

When asked what song might represent Myanmar, I immediately thought of this one. I am from the Burmese Rohingya ethnic-religious minority. It is still not safe for us in Myanmar. This song gives hope for a better future.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n\n\n\n

Tell us something about yourself. Who are you?<\/em><\/summary>\n

My name is Zaw Htet Naing. I fled to the Netherlands in 2018. It became too unsafe for me. Myanmar considers the Rohingya as \u2018foreigners\u2019 even though we have lived in Myanmar for generations. Many Rohingya fled because the army persecutes, expels and kills us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When I was young, I was always scared. Just like my parents. Fortunately, I was able to get an education and find work in the Netherlands. It was difficult to build a new life, though, because there are few people from Myanmar in the Netherlands. In the beginning, I therefore felt very lonely. Through Facebook, it is possible to keep some contact with my mother. My father fled to Thailand. My married sister still lives in Myanmar.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n\n\n\n
