"I have never stopped believing that I do deserve freedom, dignity and the right to thrive, like every woman"

Anoniem | Azarnoush Khoddami

What is the song about? What does the song mean?

The song برای (Baraye) of singer-songwriter Shervin Hajipour is about freedom and peace. The singer expresses the decades-old desire and longing of Iranians for peace and freedom. The song characterises a country where a majority of citizens, especially the younger generation, are clamouring for basic necessities like being allowed to dance or kiss a loved one on the street without fear. Or choosing their own religion or way of life without being the risk of being shot. These shared pains and wishes, expressed by Shervin, are not only cries for justice, but they also demand freedom and a peaceful life.

Why is the song so well known in your country of origin?

The song is so well known because it tells of shared pain that a majority of Iranians have suffered for nearly 50 years.

What special meaning does the song have for you?

When Shervin sings these words, his special voice and choice of words remind me strongly of the nagging pain I have experienced throughout my life due to the forced conditions that were brought to Iran.

Tell us something about yourself. Who are you?

I am an Iranian woman among many who is, first of all, very proud of the rich and long history of her country, second of all, like most Iranian women, I have faced many complex expectations and conditions (throughout my life in my country) which were not always fair. However, I have learned to stand tall and to push forward when the world around me tries to hold me back, and to turn struggle into strength, meaning that I have never stopped growing and believing that I do deserve freedom, dignity, and the right to thrive like every woman.
